Charlotte Rose with Alex Cameron

A fun shoot with artist Charlotte Rose alongside fellow photographer Alex Cameron at Shutterhouse Studios in North London.

Alex and I had been talking about studio lighting and flash technique - and how to maintain a daylight photographers style when there isn’t any daylight - so Alex booked a studio so we could play with the lights. Our main goal was to help Alex find her footing with studio flash, and for me it was a chance to try out some lighting setups I'd been visualising but hadn't yet had the opportunity to shoot.

For this test shoot I tried a few different configurations - I'd had some specific looks in mind for a while and it was satisfying to finally try them out in camera.

What I found most interesting about the day was comparing results afterwards. Same model, same studio, same equipment, same backdrops - and yet Alex's shots and mine came out completely differently. That's the thing about lighting: the choices you make are essentially the difference between one photographer and another - of course it’s not where the differences end - I found Alex also directs her subjects quite differently to me. In this scenario you can really see how the photographers eye can result in such different images.

Charlotte was brilliant to work with throughout - relaxed in front of the lens and up for trying different setups as the shoot evolved.

See my shots below, and definitely check out Alex's take on the same shoot over on her Instagram.
