How Much Are Actor Headshot Sessions in London?
How long is a piece of string.
I'll focus on the London market - but even then it's a broad range. Prices vary from around £50 at the lower end to £1,000 or more at the top, with a lot of photographers to choose from across that spectrum. The average tends to sit somewhere in the £200-450 range.
What affects the price?
A few things drive the difference in cost and they're worth understanding before you book:
Session length - a longer session means more time to try different looks, outfits, and expressions. Rushed shoots rarely produce the best results, so it's worth checking how long you'll actually have with the photographer.
Number of final images - some packages include only two or three selects, others ten or more. Think about how many looks you want to come away with and whether the package covers that, or whether you'd be likely to add more images on top.
Retouching - this catches people out. Some photographers include retouching as standard, some charge extra for it, and some don't offer it at all. Make sure you know what you're getting. For context, retouching is included as standard in all of my sessions.
Studio hire - some photographers shoot in their own studio, others hire one per shoot and factor that into the price. Neither is better necessarily, but it's useful to know what you're paying for.
Experience and specialisation - a photographer who shoots actors regularly will understand what casting directors are looking for in a way that a general portrait photographer may not. That knowledge shows up in the final images.
You often get what you pay for - but not always
At the £50 end of the market, the odds are the quality won't be very high and it'll be visible in the photos. If that's genuinely the maximum you can spend then a photo is better than no photo - but it's worth being aware of the risk. Bad headshots can cost you auditions, and that's a higher stakes outcome than most people factor in when trying to save money on the shoot.
That said, the most expensive option isn't automatically the best one either. Have a look around at who's working in the market - whose style resonates with you, whose work suits the kind of roles you're going for, and whether their package gives you enough to work with.
What to look for beyond price
Portfolio quality is the obvious one - do their existing headshots feel natural and characterful, or do they look stiff and overly posed? Do they have experience photographing actors specifically? A good headshot photographer will also make you feel at ease on set, which directly affects the quality of what you get - so it's worth reading reviews or asking around.
